Live from the WCMW: Week 3

May 23, 2012

We had such a great time with Lynn Klock and the rest of the saxophone quartet (Jeff, Aaron, and Anthony) on Saturday night!  Did you know that four saxophones could perform such a diverse program of music?!  For those of you who may have missed it (or for those of you who’d like to relive the evening!), here is a brief video clip:

Coached and directed by Lynn Klock, a professor at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst, the three remaining members of the quartet are graduate students in the UMass Music Department.

The quartet members took turns speaking about each piece on the program, giving us a little history on the composer and the time in which the piece was written.  Towards the end of the evening, we had a dynamic Q&A session!

Our post-concert reception included Mini Caprese Salads (tomato, mozzarella, and basil) and lemonade.  Welcome, summer!

Join us this Saturday, May 26 at 7 p.m. at the First Congregational Church for our final WCMW event of the season – The Copernicus Duo!

Live from the WCMW: Week 2

May 16, 2012

We had such a fun time with Dr. Susan Conkling at our first WCMW Community Sing last week!  We sang some of our favorites (notably “Yellow Submarine” and “This Land Is Your Land”) but we all learned something new, as well.  Here are a few video highlights, for your enjoyment!

It was great to have such a diverse group of people who were willing to raise their voices in song together!  We were singing in three-part harmony within the first 10 minutes!

One of our favorite moments of the evening was performing “Banuwa” – a part song from Liberia with interludes performed by an impromptu percussion ensemble!

We shared a special moment with mothers who had their children with them in honor of Mother’s Day.

Of course, what could be more appropriate following an all-American sing-a-long than serving up some homemade (musical) cookies and chocolate milk?!

Join us for this Saturday’s WCMW event (7 p.m. at the First Congregational Church) – a saxophone quartet under the direction of Lynn Klock!

This is how we do mic checks.

Sometimes, Mondays just need a little bit of humor.  Am I right?!  Hope you enjoy this funny behind-the-scenes video I took of Steve before our concert this weekend.  And in case you’re wondering, yes, this really is how we do mic checks.

Come Sing With Us!

May 11, 2012

Steve and I are very excited about this weekend’s WCMW event – our first Community Sing!

You may be wondering: What is this Community Sing really all about?  Well, it’s an opportunity for you to participate in the act of making of music rather than just listening.  It’s something everyone can be a part of so bring your children, your neighbors, and your friends!  Some of the songs may be familiar to you while others may be new.  Here’s the playlist for the evening:

(I’ve Got) Peace Like a River
I am a Pizza
There is More Love Somewhere
I Love the Mountains (Boom-dee-ah-da)
This Land is Your Land
Yonder Come Day
This Little Light of Mine
Rise Up O, Flame
Banuwa
The Garden Song (Inch-by-Inch)
Yellow Submarine
Bring Me Little Water Silvie
One Voice
I’ll Fly Away
Magic Penny

Some of the song texts are included in your program book (which we’ll have for you tomorrow night).  The rest are easy – we’ll learn as we go.  You don’t need to be a member of a choir to participate, you don’t need to know how to read music, and you won’t be asked to sing a solo!  If you sing in the shower, sing in the car, sing to your children at bedtime, sing “Sweet Caroline” at baseball games, sing hymns in church on Sunday morning, or sing karaoke on Thursday nights, this event is for you!  Guest Artist Dr. Susan Conkling will lead us but if you play an accompanying instrument (guitar, banjo, hand drum, bass, etc.), please bring it along!  Towards the end of the evening, anyone who wants to accompany will be welcome to join in.

Looking forward to making music with you!

The second season of the WCMW started last Saturday and what a fun time we had!  This week, we are excited to welcome Dr. Susan Conkling to Westminster to lead us in a good, old-fashioned community sing-a-long.  The evening will include crowd favorites such as “Yellow Submarine” and “This Land is Your Land.”  Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend!  Meet us at the First Congregational Church at 7:00 p.m. to be a part of the fun!  Just as a reminder, you don’t have to be able to read music and you don’t need to prepare anything ahead of time.  Come as you are!  After the concert, please join us for a brief reception.

Thanks again for your support of the Westminster Chamber Music Workshop.  We look forward to singing with you this weekend!
